| EA: Online Pass discontinued |
Thursday, 16.05.2013 |
EA will discontinue the Online Pass, announced EA senior director of corporate communications John Reseburg at GamesBeat. The decision was partially based on player response.
Yes, we’re discontinuing Online Pass. None of our new EA titles will include that feature.
Initially launched as an effort to package a full menu of online content and services, many players didn’t respond to the format. We’ve listened to the feedback and decided to do away with it moving forward.
The Online Pass was activated by a one-time code packaged with the game and was needed for unlocking the multiplayer modes and online features. If you're playing the game on another console or if you bought the software used, you had to acquire a new code from EA (of course, for a fee).
The Online Pass is problem for the second-hand market and also publishers like Activision and Ubisoft make use of it. But from this point on you won't need an Online Pass for any of EA's future games online.

| EA Restructuring with massive Layoffs (Update) |
Friday, 26.04.2013 |
Electronic Arts is restructuring, which resulted in massive layoffs yesterday. According to Kotaku EA is cutting jobs today with estimates of as much as 10% of the workforce. Wordwide EA employed more than 9,000 people.
EA even made an official statement on their website:
In recent weeks, EA has aligned all elements of its organizational structure behind priorities in new technologies and mobile. This has led to some difficult decisions to reduce the workforce in some locations. We are extremely grateful for the contributions made by each of our employees – those that are leaving EA will be missed by their colleagues and friends.
These are hard but essential changes as we focus on delivering great games and showing players around the world why to spend their time with us.
As it seems the studios PopCap Vancouver and Quicklime Studios are being closed. Quicklime Studios, which is a rebrand from EA Black Box was known for developing Need for Speed World, though it's not sure yet what this will mean for the future of NFS World.
Update:
Due to the concerns from the community the NFS World Team announced in an official statement, that Need for Speed World is not being shut down:
First and foremost, Need for Speed World IS NOT BEING SHUT DOWN. There is still a team dedicated to keeping the game up and running. Secondly, we’ve been keeping our eyes on our Facebook page, Twitter & Forums and have noticed that quite a few players have expressed concerns about their NFS World accounts. Allow us to confirm that nothing is happening to your accounts. They will be waiting for you in the game as they’ve always been.
We know that this isn’t a lot of information but we wanted to at least let everyone know that the game will carry on! In the coming weeks we will post more information about these changes as it comes available.

| Criterion's Alex Ward doesn't work on racing games |
Tuesday, 16.04.2013 |
The headline might be weird, but isn't it funny how some innocent tweets can stir up the internet and evolve to a shocking news that Criterion Games might has stopped working on racing games? Many media sites picked up a story, based on tweets by Criterion's Creative Directory Alex Ward.
It all started with small rumours about an unannounced racing game at Criterion Games, which could be a new Need for Speed or Burnout. Then EGM publish a logo draft of a new NFS Underground, which was pointed out as a fake by Criterion's developer Alex Ward. (see here and here)
Then Alex Ward went even further and announced not to be working on another racing game, as it is time for something new:
After over a decade of making racing games it's time to make something new. It is early days thus I have nothing to "announce" or talk about.
But if you are following me expecting some Megaton of a new Burnout game, or an Underground remake then I have to disappoint you.
I am proud of all of the Burnout games. When it feels right we will make another one. We are creative people.
Well, several media sites interpreted this as the Studio Criterion Games won't be making any more racing games, but this was demented today by Alex, indicating that HE was the one who isn't working on racing games anymore, not the whole team...
As entertaining Twitter can be, when you cram your messages in 140 characters it can easily lead to misunderstandings, as this example showed...

| NFS Underground the next NFS in 2013? (Rumour) |
Friday, 12.04.2013 |
The rumours won't stop. After the news about an "unannounced racing game" at Criterion, now EGM received a new logo, which could point to a relaunch off the successful Need for Speed Underground!
The logo came from an anonymous source and it doesn't look very finished, given the repeated elements. Since today everybody can photoshop such graphics quite easily, it looks very well like a fake.
EGM contacted Electronic Arts, but an EA rep stated that the company does not comment on rumors or speculation.
UPDATE: Criterion's Alex Ward demented on Twitter any plans on working on a relaunch of NFS Underground - see here and here.
